Ethereal Step

1st-level movement

Activation Time: 1 minute
Range: Self
Duration: 1 minute

Your body shifts from the material world into the Ethereal Overlay, the region of the ethereal plane that reflects and overlaps the material world. Your body can stay in the Ethereal Overlay for the duration, allowing you to observe the world, though not generally interact with it.

You take any items you are carrying or wearing with you, unless they are Medium or larger, in which case they are left behind in the space you occupied when this power was triggered.

While in the overlay, your powers only function in the Ethereal Plane, not in the material world.

You can wander for as long as you wish, can freely travel through the Ethereal Overlay, but not deeper into the Ethereal Plane. Also, you can not pass through portals there leading to any other plane. When the duration expires, you can activate the power again without returning to your body as a standard action.

You cannot be sensed on the material plane through the normal senses, are able to move through mundane barriers, such as walls, unhindered (unless those walls also exist on the Ethereal Overlay). The physical environment of the material plane has no effect on you.

The effect ends for you (and any you bring with you at higher levels) when you use your action to dismiss it. When the effect ends, all affected creatures return to the material plane in the space analogous to their location on the overlay. If this would place them inside of a solid object and that object does not fill the entire space, the creature must make a Dexterity saving throw DC 12. Success indicates you were able to pass through, but you take 2d6 points of force damage. Failure indicates you didn't make it through and take 4d6 force damage. If the object could normally be carried by you, you can move on carrying the weight, but continue to take 1d6 force damage at the end of your turn until the object or creature is removed. If the object is a barrier or otherwise anchored, in order to move on, you must trigger the power again. This requires a Concentration check DC 10 or half the amount of the last damage taken, whichever is higher.

This power might also end early for you or one of your companions. A successful Negate Power targeting your analogous space in the material plane ends the power for that creature.

If you are returned to the material world prematurely, any companions you've brought with you are also returned under the same conditions.

At Higher Levels. If you activate this power using a higher level power slot, you gain the ability to bring companions. For every level 2nd and higher you add one companion, bringing them with you into the Ethereal Overlay. Once in the Ethereal Overlay the companion can move freely at their normal speed, however, if you return to the waking world, they must as well.
